I purchased this book for three reasons: First, it is by Karen Katz; second, my daughter’s middle name is Lena; and last, because it is about the twelve months of the year. This is a really great story about Katz’ daughter, Lena and how she makes a hat for each month of the year. The pictrures are bold and colorful and filled with vocabulary you can review with your little one including colors, shapes, and everyday items. It also reviews the seasons as well as the holidays associated with each of the months. Another positive is that for December it refers to Hanukkah, Kwanza, and Christmas. The last picture is a fold out and has items associated with all three of those holidays.

I was disappointed, however, in the month of June which says “June 23rd is Lena’s birthday!” What about Father’s Day? In May it shows a picture of flowers and bouquets and a sign that says “I love Mom” but there is only Lena’s birthday in June. I am sure Katz wrote this book specifically for her little girl, but she should have considered her target audience/market. I also wish this came in a board book.

Overall, another great book by Katz!

Yet another book I bought for preschool. It received a lot of love quickly. Each month has a different hat. Very helpful for reviewing months of the year with small children.

Also inspiration for hat creation for those little hands. :)

My only beef is that the final page is not a bit more sturdy. As a large fold out, it needs to be able to put up with more abuse than a normal piece of paper.
